Monkey Cup in a Hanging Basket
Monkey Cup is a bug eating plant. It secretes a bug alluring juice in a cup that forms on the plant. The bug goes into the cup and is dissolved by the juice. It gets its name from monkeys sometimes drinking the juice formed in the cup. A very unusual plant. It is also called the Asian Pitcher Plant or Tropical Pitcher Plant.
There are two types of Monkey Cups. One grows in the Highlands which prefers more sun and higher heat and one grows in the Lowlands which requires less light and cooler temperatures at night. To determine which type you have, watch the leaves and pitchers. Start with more light and warmer temperatures. If it appears to be drying out, move to an area with less light and less heat.
This can be a fun one to grow with its unique pitchers. It is a slow grower some it may take a coouple of years to begin to mature and develop pitchers. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Do not fertilize as the prefer very low nutrients. Cut off any browing leaves.
Monkey Cup is native to India and East Asia.
